About competition

The Cumberland Pencil Company is thrilled to announce that The Derwent art prize will be running its third art competition in 2016. The Prize is open to international artists and aims to reward excellence through showcasing the very best works created in pencil.

In just two years, this art competition, now biannual has attracted well over 4,000 entries from 58 countries worldwide. Previous First Prize-winners are Brian Fay (2014) and Chrys Allen (2013), whose winning entries were shown alongside all shortlisted works in exhibitions at the Mall Galleries in London and on tour across the UK.

The works entered must be created in pencil (including water-soluble, pastel, graphite, charcoal or colouring pencils). The work must not exceed 182cms in its greatest dimension. There is no minimum size limit.

The Prize is open to both 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional works. All entered work must have been completed within the last 3 years. The work selected for exhibition must be available from 1st September 2016 – 31st January 2017.

Copyright of all works remains the property of the artist.

There is an entry fee of 15 GBP (approx. 21 USD) for the first work and 5 GBP (approx. 7 USD) per additional works.

Eligibility

This art competition is open to all living British and international artists over the age of 18 years old on 1st June 2016.

Prize

A total prize fund of 12,500 GBP (approx. 18,080 USD) will be awarded at the Private View at Mall Galleries, London in 2016 and will be divided as follows:

• First Prize: 6,000 GBP
• Second Prize: 3,500 GBP
• Third Prize: 1,000 GBP
• People’s Choice Award (Exhibition): 750 GBP
• People's Choice Award (All entries): 750 GBP
• Young Artist Award (For artists under 25 years): 500 GBP

Works selected for exhibition may be offered for sale.
