Science without Borders Challenge

Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation’s Science without Borders® Challenge is an international art competition that engages students to promote the need to preserve, protect, and restore the world’s oceans and aquatic resources and to get students and teachers interested in ocean conservation through various forms of art. This annual contest inspires students to be creative while learning about important ocean conservation issues.

For this year’s Challenge, students are invited to use their artistic talents to create a piece of art that illustrates Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated fishing, this is often called IUU fishing.

The SWB Challenge is open to primary and secondary school students 11-19 years old, with scholarships of up to $500 awarded to the winning entries.

Experts calculate that IUU fishing costs the global economy between $10 and $23 billion per year. This type of fishing damages conservation and management efforts, threatens ecosystems and food security, and sometimes breaks international laws. IUU fishing is a problem and it contributes to overfishing in multiple ways. How will you bring awareness of IUU fishing with your art for this year’s Challenge?

All submissions must be individual and each participant may submit 1 artwork.

The Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation is a US based, non-profit foundation dedicated to conserving and restoring oceans through applied science, education and outreach, and working with local partners and governments to promote coral reef conservation.

There is no entry fee for this student art competition!

The SWB Challenge art competition is open to primary and secondary school students 11-19 years old.
