About Competition

The GIRAF 15 - International Festival of Independent Animation Competition, organised by Quickdraw Animation Society (QAS), a non-profit, artist-run centre in Calgary Alberta, (Canada), is accepting submissions for 2019.

GIRAF is committed to creating greater awareness for animation as an art form, through interactive activities including workshops, artist talks, visiting artists, and animation screenings. We focus on presenting works that push boundaries through the development of new techniques, hybrid forms of creation, and challenging subject matter, and thus animation that is rarely seen at other festivals. GIRAF is run by the Quickdraw Animation Society, a non-profit, artist-run centre in Calgary Alberta. This annual animation festival that runs each November at the Globe Cinema in Calgary, GIRAF celebrates the spirit of independent, underground, and experimental animation, showcasing Canadian animators and presenting diverse animations from around the globe.

The organizers of this cmpetition are looking for animation submissions, in all styles, genres, lengths, and mediums, to present to their audience in Calgary, Canada. That can mean abstract or narrative, hand-drawn or computer-generated, student films or well-established professionals, or somewhere in between. They want films they can be excited about, films that are pushing forward what animation can do.

It is no accepted commercial work, please — some of those are super cool, but commercials, explainers, festival stingers and those sorts of things fall outside what the festival is all about. The festival is also aimed at an adult audience, so organiser rarely select films that are explicitly aimed at children. Music videos are admittedly a bit of a grey area.

GIRAF presents independent animation that pushes boundaries through the use of new techniques, unique visions, and stimulating subject matter.

Selected films will be presented during GIRAF 15 — scheduled for November 2019 and the best International and Canadian short film will be awarded.
