About Competition

The Alpine Fellowship , a non-profit venture established for the purposes of promoting culture and the arts, now accepting applications for its Art Prize 2019 for the best visual arts response to "Identity" – the theme of the 2019 Alpine Fellowship Annual Symposium. Every year writing, visual arts, and theatre prizes are awarded to the best works concerning the years’ theme.

The Alpine Fellowship is a group of writers, thinkers and artists who are passionate about learning and communicating with a view to better understanding themselves and others.
We value a capacity for openness - being engaged in critically reflecting on firmly held beliefs; the courage to be vulnerable - speaking from a place of lived experience; the drive for curiosity - being truly able to receive and listen to others.

We think it important to support young people today who may have become somewhat disillusioned by the reality of modern day education. We care about discovering what an alternative model of education might look like. Hence the spirit of the enterprise is necessarily open ended, and we welcome and seek the support, contribution and presence of anyone who relates to what we care about.

The theme of the 2019 Alpine Fellowship Annual Symposium is "Identity".

...The history of our species involves progressive attempts to articulate responses to the phenomenon of identity. In the social and political sphere, identity can either play out on the level of the individual or of the collective. On the level of the individual, the question concerning identity asks whether there is such a thing as the essence of a person. What is it that makes me the particular and unique individual that I am? To what extent am I a product of my time, and is there something about personhood that endures while the world around me remains in flux?

On the level of groups, identity is what distinguishes one group from another, and we might ask questions such as what makes a nation a nation, or a family, or a club. We anticipate considering the role of our geography, of our values, religion, ethnicity, or ideology in the shaping of group identities. In an age of digital interconnectedness people belong to tribes that extend far beyond geographical boundaries.
