’Lasciare il segno (Leaving the mark)’ is the 2nd edition of the street art competition organised by Municipality of Milan, International Association BJCEM-Biennale des Jeunes Créateurs de l’Europe et de la Méditerranée and Africa e Mediterraneo Association, aimed at selecting 4 street artists who will be invited to the city of Milan for a residency program from November 11 to 21, 2018.
About Competition
Organised by Municipality of Milan, International Association BJCEM-Biennale des Jeunes Créateurs de l’Europe et de la Méditerranée and Africa e Mediterraneo Association, "Lasciare il segno (Leaving the mark)" is the 2nd edition of the street art competition, aimed at selecting 4 street artists who will be invited to the city of Milan for a residency program from November 11 to 21, 2018.
The project is designed as a path to train and raise young people’s awareness on the reality of migration and the concept of asylum, drawing a common action plan aimed at increasing the commitment against racism and all forms of intolerance and discrimination. The instrument chosen to tackle these delicate issues in this second edition is street art, a medium that allows to come into direct contact with the youngster, helping them to trigger reflections and constructive dialogue, while allowing the fruition of the artwork results by a wider public.
The edition of this year also collects and will be part of “Milano Città Mondo“, an research project that every year offers insights on one of the many communities living in the city. These anthropological and sociological researches are transformed into exhibitions and program events. The fourth edition of the project will be focused on migratory flows between Peru and Italy, with an in-depth analysis of the Milan’s community, which is the third largest community of migrants in the city since the seventies.
The call is aimed at selecting 4 street artists (2 Italians and 2 international), who will be invited to the city of Milan for a residency program from November 11 to 21, 2018.
Each candidate participates individually, and no artists collective are allowed.
Residency program
The residency will consist of a first phase made up of meetings, confrontation and dialogue, intended to brainstorm, stimulate the creativity of the artists, and find brainstorm to find useful ideas for the next step. The second phase will be the creative one, which will be dedicated to the realization of one or more street artworks directly inside the walls of one of the structures of the protection system for refugees and asylum seekers of the City of Milan.
The objective of this action is to carry out a work of real inclusion, allowing the selected artists to work, led by a tutor and a cultural mediator, with the collaboration of the asylum seekers that are present in the center, listening their voices and together imagining a mural to be created starting from their suggestions and with their help to leave a tangible sign right on the walls of one of the structures of the protection system for refugees and asylum seekers of the City of Milan. A way to make the reality of those centers known also to the outside world, raising the awarness of the public on these delicate subjects. The final event will play a key role in the dissemination of the project.
The artistic project will be realized on walls previously identified and authorized by the Municipality of Milan, with an active involvement of local communities. The selected street artists will work together with an artistic curator, Federico Manzone, cartoonist and street artist, and they will use participatory methodologies involving citizens, institutions and all other relevant stakeholders, in the construction of the artistic project.

The intellectual property of the works belongs to the authors.
The selection of 4 artists will be carried out by the organizers, and the names of the selected ones will be published on BJCEM website (www.bjcem.org) by October 25, 2018. The selected ones will receive an email notification with the details to attend the residence.
There is no entre fees to participate!
Eligibility
>Lasciare il segno (Leaving the mark)> is open to individual young artists (between the ages of 18 and 35) who live or work in the countries where there are members of BJCEM Network: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Malta, Montenegro, Norway, Palestine, Portugal, San Marino, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey and the UK. Given the specific focus on the Peruvian community, participation by young Peruvian artists resident in the countries mentioned above is encouraged.
