BAMB Reversible design competition

BAMB Reversible design competition now is over!
BAMB welcomes students of architecture and engineering from all EU universities to participate in the BAMB Reversible design competition to design a reversible building that has flexibility and transformation capacity to change its function by time according to the changeable needs.
About Competition
University of Minho, in Portugal, on behalf of BAMB’s consortium welcomes students of architecture and engineering from all EU universities to participate in the BAMB Reversible design competition.
Using BAMB’s materials passports’ platform and BAMB´s reversible design guidelines and protocol, the competition invites students to release their ideas and innovative plans to design a reversible building that has flexibility and transformation capacity to change its function by time according to the changeable needs in order to embrace three temporary functions: commercial, residential and services.
The main goal of the competition is to twist the visions of young professionals-to-be towards the circular economy concepts in the building sector, its new opportunities and applications.
You are invited to submit your proposals individually or in teams up to 3 persons.
The BAMB – Building As Material Banks – project has been working on developing and integrating tools including reversible design and materials passports in order to enable a systemic shift in the building sector, where dynamically and flexibly designed buildings can be incorporated into a circular economy. Through design and circular value chains, materials, products and components used in renovations and new buildings can sustain their value over time. Instead of being to-be waste, buildings will function as banks of valuable materials – slowing down the usage of resources to a rate that meets the capacity of the planet.
This design competition aims to boost material circularity on one hand and support short-term and long-term use changes on the other hand. Also, the material health aspect is important to be addressed in order to minimize the use of hazardous chemical components in the materials that make up the products (e.g. heavy metals, pigments, halogen compounds etc.). The proposed final design should result in the use of easy exchangeable/dynamic parts of products and building components subject to easy customization and upgrading. The challenge lays in careful design that allows smooth transition from one functional scenario to another minimising construction and deconstruction waste, expressing the reversibility represented in its capacity to transform in function, size and shape.
Submission requirements:
Language: English
Each participant must deliver a maximum of 3 x A1 panels in pdf format that include:
1. Plans of the functional spaces, elevations, sections and details with appropriate scale defined by the participants;
2. 2D and 3D drawings that the participant finds necessary to illustrate the approach;
3. Written descriptions;
4. A “Table of buildings materials and components” with all the proposed materials and components for each function.
To participate, all individuals and teams must register by completing and submitting the registration form in the official website.
All materials submitted to “BAMB’s reversible design competition” become the property of BAMB project.
All the awarded proposals will be transmitted to the BAMB’s official website, and the 3 winning designs will be disseminated by BAMB.
The results of the competition will be officially announced by January 14th, 2019.
