About Competition
The Estonian Institute of Historical Memory recently has organised an international interior design award to find the best designs for an international museum of the crimes of communism, which is to be established in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia.
The objective of this design competition is to find a contemporary, attractive and visitor-friendly design for the museum’s architecture, exposition and interior. This museum is one of a kind in the world. The plan is to establish it on the shore of the Gulf of Finland right in Tallinn’s city centre in the Patarei complex, which is under cultural heritage protection.
The Patarei complex is one of Europe’s largest intact classicist style military installations. The museum is planned to an approximately 5,000 square meter area in the eastern part of the building, with authentic prison cells, an execution chamber, corridors, a prison lean with prisoners’ walkways and much more.
The exposition of the planned museum introduces the causes of and crimes committed by communist regimes on a multi-level basis: from a global scale, the focus moves to the events in Europe, and finally to a more detailed overview of local history under communist rule.
Materials of the competition entry must be submitted on survey sheets in A1 format on rigid bases. Up to 8 survey sheets in total may be submitted within the framework of one competition entry. Additionally, the graphic portion of the entry must be submitted digitally on CD or DVD as .pdf or .jpg files of sufficient quality to be printed out, and a letter of explanation should be included as a .pdf or .txt file.
For more details about submission requirement you will find on the official web site.
This competition opens on 1 February 2018 and the deadline for submitting competition entries is 24 March 2018 at 12 noon (EET).
The jury will evaluate the quality of the ideas and form of the design projects that have been deemed to be in accordance with requirements, along with their correspondence to the task, and will determine the recipients of the competition’s awards anonymously by way of the keywords of the projects.
