Presented by the Benrido Collotype Atelier, photo contest titled The Hariban Award, now in its 5th year, combines a 150-year-old analogue technique with the new vision of digital-age photography inviting all professionals and amateurs alike to submit black and white photographs for a chance to win this remarkable award.
About Competition
Photo contest titled 2018 Hariban Award organised by Benrido Collotype Atelier has been recently opened for entries inviting all professionals and amateurs alike working in black and white only to partecipate for a chance to win this remarkable award.
Now in its 5th year, the Hariban Award combines a 150-year-old analogue technique with the new vision of digital-age photography.
Submission Specifications:
Each artist is limited to 1 entry. Each artist will submit 12 black and white photographs. Images must be submitted digitally.
All submissions must adhere to the following specifications:
• File format: JPEG
• Resolution: 72 ppi/dpi
• Longest dimension: 1500 pixels
• Colour space: grayscale or RGB
• Black and White submissions ONLY
Each photographer will submit a brief artist’s statement along with his or her photos. Before beginning the submission process, write a short descriptive paragraph (50–100 words) to provide a context in which the judges may understand and appreciate your work.
Submissions will be judged by a panel of four jurors in two rounds. The recipient of the Grand Prize will travel to Kyoto for two weeks to collaborate with the Benrido printers in producing a portfolio of 8 collotypes, which will be exhibited as a solo show the following Spring. In addition to the grand prize, the jury will award 4 individuals with the Juror’s Choice Award as well as honourable mentions. The recipients of the Juror’s Choice Award and Honourable Mentions will be published in the annual competition catalogue and will receive copies of the publication.
The Kyoto is imperial capital of Japan for more than a thousand years and today the city of Kyoto is the last bastion of many traditional arts and artisan crafts, such as weaving, silk dying, brewing, pottery, calligraphy, and printmaking. The winner of the HARIBAN AWARD will travel to this major cultural heritage site between mid-September and early October 2018
.
The collotype prints will be exhibited in a solo-show the following Spring from April to May 2019
.
The entry fee is 5,000 Yen (that’s approximately $46 USD).
