IFA - International FINSA Award 2019 now is over!
Finsa, the oldest chipboard and MDF manufacturer in the Iberian Peninsula, is hosting its 2019 architecture competitions for students of architecture & design.
About Competition
Finsa, the oldest chipboard and MDF (Medium-density fibreboard) manufacturer in the Iberian Peninsula, recently has announced the call for entries for its International FINSA Award 2019, architecture competitions that challenges students to explore the use of recyclable and sustainable materials in construction. The competition will showcase the work of the students and their tutors (if applicable), who support the design and development of the project, most importantly, the use of sustainable materials and design techniques.
The International FINSA Award for Students of Architecture & Design 2019 aims to encourage and challenge students to explore and redesign the use of wood and other ecological and recyclable materials in construction. The organizers believe that the future in construction should continue developing this way and know it is possible to achieve.
Location/Size of the area available for the design:
Woodside is a small riverside locality in Birkenhead, on the Wirral Peninsula, England, situated almost opposite Liverpool Pier Head across the River Mersey. Woodside is situated on the eastern side of the Wirral Peninsula, adjoining the River Mersey to the east. Woodside is about 5.5 km (3.4 mi) south-south-east of the Irish Sea at New Brighton and about 10.5 km (6.5 mi) east-north-east of the Dee Estuary at Thurstaston. The area is at an elevation of between 0–11 m (0–36 ft) above sea level.
Woodside Pavilion is a temporary structure designed to house practical art activities for the local community.
Conceived as an informal, pop-up space, the purpose of the pavilion is to engage and offer dialogue and collaboration between groups of people who do not normally have the opportunity to meet with or collaborate with practical artists. Coinciding with the Imagine Wirral year of Culture next year, the pavilion will host between 2 and 3 weeks of programming run by artists from the local community, designed for children, teenagers and adults.
Beyond offering a space to host workshops, talks and events, the aim of the project is to bring the local community together through architecture and design.
You may submit more than one project (or be participant in more teams) if you have registered specifically for the different projects - and if every project is backed by named teachers. However, organiser recommend that you participate only with one elaborated project.
The aims of the project are to:
• Reflect on the historical and geographical context, understanding the rich local history of Woodside that carries important meaning for the community.
• Serve as a platform to invite and support a plurality of diverse voices and audiences.
• House and be a focus for leading arts initiatives and activities and engage and collaborate with community groups active in the area.
• Be a flexible or modular design that can be taken down easily and transported to other locations across to borough, where it will be used for other programming and create a sense of continuity for the community.
• Be architecturally innovative and use solely or predominantly Finsa materials (a small budget has been set aside for exceptional additional materials).
The panel will judge the competition in terms of the following criteria:
• Considering the design might be built, full details of every mesh has to be provided.
• The design of the multipurpose space must consider the needs of both children and the elderly, including safety, accessibility and interaction.
• The design must be efficient, using sustainable and/or recyclable materials.
• All designs remain the intellectual property of the architect however the winning design itself will remain the property of International Finsa Award (FINSA UK LTD).
• Portfolios will be judged on originality, demonstration of creativity and relevance to the project.
• The total cost of materials and construction cannot exceed £15,000.
There is no entry fee to participate!
Eligibility
Eligible to enter are students or graduates being no more than 5 years post graduate of Architecture and/or Design, as part of a team of 2 members or alone. The award considers the work of both teachers and students or short term graduates, all of whom will be acknowledged and awarded.
