The James Dyson Award, run by the James Dyson Foundation is an international design award that celebrates, encourages and inspires the next generation of design engineers.
About Competition
The James Dyson Award now is open for entries! This is an international design award that celebrates, encourages and inspires the next generation of design engineers.
Open to current and recent design engineering students, this competition is run by the James Dyson Foundation, James Dyson’s charitable trust, as part of its mission to get young people excited about design engineering.
The brief for this year is ’Design Something That Solves a Problem’. Organiser is looking for designers who think differently, to create products that work better. This year the James Dyson will also looking for entries that address a sustainability issue, or have been designed, sourced or manufactured sustainably.
Submission requirements:
➜ the name of the Invention, which will appear on all communication and media coverage concerning the Invention;
➜ a succinct description (no longer than 200 words) of the Invention, outlining its principal purpose and function, which should describe the problem solved and how the Invention does this;
➜ an explanation of the inspiration behind the Invention, along with the entrant’s personal motivation;
➜ an explanation of how the Inventions works;
➜ an explanation of the development process that the entrant/team took to develop the Invention;
➜ an explanation of what makes the Invention different, including an explanation of how it is different to other products already on the market;
➜ an explanation of future plans for the Invention, including further design development;
➜ low resolution images including (without limitation): sketches, plans, 3D models or prototypes (optional) and photo-realistic 3D CAD renderings (optional) and one high res (300dpi) image of the Invention on a white background.
➜ entrants shall endeavour to also provide a video of the concept or prototype in action.
➜ all written elements of the entry need to be in the English.
Entrants may submit Entries for as many Inventions as they wish, but may not submit more than one Entry per Invention.
During July 2020 a panel of local judges in each region will select up to 3 Inventions from each Eligible Country which they consider to be the best. The Shortlist will go through to a second round of judging. During the second round, the Shortlist will be further scrutinised by an industry panel comprising experienced engineers from the Dyson group of companies, who will reduce the shortlist to the Inventions which they consider to be the best 20.
Sir James Dyson will select (at his discretion) the international JDA winner as well as the international JDA runners-up from the Final Shortlist. This will be the best entry that addresses a sustainability issue or has incorporated sustainability into the design process, materials or manufacturing.
There is no entry fee to participate!
Eligibility
The James Dyson Award is open to current university students of engineering, product design and industrial design – and those who have graduated in these subjects in the last four years. If you don't want to work alone, or if you studied something else but have a brilliant idea you want to share, you can still enter as part of a team.
They are also open to those completing degree-level apprenticeships, or those who have completed one in the past four years, in the field of engineering or design.
