KIHARA, a Japanese porcelain producing company is hosting its design contest for European artists, illustrators and graphic designers, dedicate to designing an original artwork for a 15-cm-diameter porcelain plate.
About Competition

KIHARA, INC. is a Japanese porcelain producing company based in Arita; a well know historical porcelain industrial area with a 400 year history. When you see Arita porcelain products, you realize how they differ from other porcelain, especially in the tone of white and beautiful artwork. There was a time when, through the VOC (Dutch East India Company), a great deal of Arita porcelain was imported to Europe. Arita now has traditional techniques that have remained unchanged for 400 year mixed with modern techniques like 3D shape designing & machining in porcelain. Now time the time has come to show new types of Arita porcelain demonstrating an accumulation of fresh techniques and the original craftsman tradition.
KIHARA has been constantly innovating and improving its materials and techniques, continually searching for new and innovative ways to introduce Arita porcelain to the world. As part of its ongoing mission of carrying its traditional industry into the future, KIHARA continues a long tradition of collaboration between Arita’s artisans and European artists, designers and companies.
Submission requirements:
This design contest is about designing an original artwork for a 15-cm-diameter porcelain plate.
All proposals are welcome, even though the organizers are nevertheless primarily looking for inventive artworks and creators interested in KIHARA’s cultural heritage and collaborative approach.
The designer must present an artwork defined according to the required formats and dimensions: 15-cm-diameter round plate (Ø15 cm, H2.5 cm). A minimum 300 dpi resolution is needed on non-vector files.
Your design must only use cobalt blue. You can however work with a light, medium or dark shade.
The designer must be able to present him/herself for an evaluation interview on KIHARA’s exhibition stand at the MAISON&OBJET trade show (Paris-Nord Villepinte, January 18-22, 2019).
