L A M P 2019 – International Lighting Design Competition & Exhibition now is over!
The L A M P has recently announced a 6th edition of its L A M P International Lighting Design Competition & Exhibition 2019, with aim to discover and promote emerging talent in lighting design inviting all designers worldwide to participate.
About Competition
The call for entries for the L A M P 2019, the International Lighting Design Competition & Exhibition, has been reacently opened in its 6th edition and like every year invites all designers worldwide to submit their designs to be juried by some of the industry’s top professionals.
Each year L A M P challenges designers to approach their lighting fixtures with the guidance of a theme with the aim to introduce a broader audience to lighting design, as well as promote and connect emerging talents to new markets.
The theme for 2019 year is: "Texture".
The competition is open to three categories:
Established
• Entrant’s business or professional design career has been active for a minimum of 3 years.
• Entrant is not required to have a business.
• Entries welcome from all disciplines including, but not limited to: Artists, Industrial Designers and Architects
• Entries welcome from both Individuals and Teams of any size.
Emerging
• Entrant’s business or professional design career has been active for a no longer than 3 years.
• Entrant is not required to have a business.
• Entries welcome from all disciplines including, but not limited to: Artists, Industrial Designers and Architects
• Entries welcome from both Individuals and Teams of any size.
Student
• Entrant must currently be enrolled in a post-secondary design or other artistically inclined program at time of submission.
• Individuals or teams are welcome to submit
Emerging + Established submission requirements:
Designs
• There are no limitations on material type.
• Theme is open to broad interpretation. Concept Statements should reference the theme ‘Texture’, for example: ‘the texture of concrete...’
• Entry must be a produced, functioning light fixture, or prototype by the competition deadline of January 31st 2019.
• Pendant, Wall, Table or Floor light fixtures are all eligible, with designs intended for indoor use.
• Proposed Entries are not to exceed 30 cubic feet at 1:1 scale. Failure to meet required scale will result in submission being rejected.
• Entry must be an original creation without infringing on any creative copyright.
• The submitted designs must not be, or contracted to be, mass-produced. (Mass produced shall be defined as: having been on the market for more than 1 year with sales exceeding 50 units of said light fixture.)
• Should the submission be chosen for the exhibition (top ten finalist of each category) it must be wired with a 2 or 3 prong 120V North American power plug or provided with a 2 or 3 prong 120V North American power adapter that functions properly with the power source.
• If my fixture arrives and does not work I give permission to have a professional work on my light for no more than _ hours at $100 an hour.
• All finalists must provide clear instructions on how to properly assemble and wire each design in english, with a visual diagram and a list of all pieces packaged.
• With completion of submission the designer is agreeing to commit to shipping the piece to Vancouver BC to be displayed for the exhibition in 2018. Failure to comply will result with the submission being removed from the L A M P website and all marketing and promotional material.
• Please ensure all info submitted is correct - including correct spelling and grammar as L A M P will use the info for all print material if selection is chosen as a finalist.
Images
• Failure to comply with image rules will result in the submission being removed from the competition.
• A maximum of 5 images in the following format must be submitted.
- One image clearly illustrating the scale of the design: situated next to a known object to demonstrate the intended size.
- One image showing detail of materials.
- One file MAY be a video in MP4 or MOV format.
• Images must be JPGs at 300 dpi resolution and no larger than 6 MB each.
• Images must NOT have the name or logo of the designer, architect, firm, company, client or manufacturer anywhere on the image or file.
• DO NOT include any written content or text anywhere on the 5 images. Clean images showing the fixture only. No collages or layouts with multiple images. No branding. No logos. No names. No text of any kind.
• All photographs must be accompanied with a release from the photographer providing permission to L A M P for use.
• Renderings are permitted as long as they are correctly labeled. All submissions in Emerging and Established categories MUST be physically functioning lights or prototypes BY the January 31st Deadline.
• All image files must be labelled EXACTLY as follows: TITLE_Category_NAME_Imagetype_Image# (for all detailes about how to labl the images see the officla website)
Concept Statment
• 150 words max. Include objectives and how they were met, design challenges, technological and/or material innovations, and social and environmental impact.
• Concept Statements must address the designer’s interpretation of the 2019 Theme: Texture.
Project Specs
• 75 words max. Include actual or proposed dimensions, materials, fabrication techniques and manufacturing process.
Participant Bios
• 75 words max.> This portion of the competition is the only time the entrant may use their name and/or company name. This section is BLIND to the Judges.
• If selected as a Finalist, this segment will be used on the L A M P website, in social media and in all exhibition print material.
• Ensure all info submitted is correct - including correct spelling and grammar as once the application has been submitted there will be NO CHANGES
Judging Crieteria
• Aesthetics: Contemporary, visually stimulating, innovative, unique and marketable.
• Function: Simplicity and practicality of design’s intended use.
• Creativity: A unique approach to the material & concept.
• Social and Environmental Responsibility: Respectful use of materials.
• Creative Interpretation of Theme: Designer’s individual take on this year’s theme "Texture" with reference made in the concept statement
Submissions open October 1st and the deadline to submit is January 31, 2019.
Top 10 Finalists from each category will be displayed at the annual L A M P Exhibition that opens IDS Vancouver Offsite in September 2019.
The awards will be announced in November, 2018.
