The RE-START 2017 is urban design/architecture workshop organised by Innesti Urbane with aim to explore potential strategies and intervention models, at different scales and levels, for reactivating and regenerating the Oliena, Italy historical center.

About Competition

Aim of this workshop is to explore potential strategies and intervention models, at different scales and levels, for reactivating and regenerating the Oliena historical center which involves designing the overall process, re-establishing the links to the surrounding landscape and environment, exploring the urban, techno-typological as well as the economic and social feasibility.

Oliena is a village surrounded by limestone highlands, diverse landscape features and archaeological sites: caves, doline (Tiscali), sources (su Gologone), holy wells (sa Sedda ‘e sos Carros), menhirs, Paleolithic villages with a rich agriculture (olives, vineyards) and livestock. Oliena is also part of the so called ‘blue zone’, a geographic area in inner Sardinia, where the inhabitants live for a long time, much longer than average, often longer than one century. Finally, Oliena is also one of the authentic Italian hamlets; however, its historical center is characterized by an increasing phenomenon of abandonment that since the 80s has led the local population to move to peripheral expansion zones, triggering a process of progressive physical degradation of the ancient urban fabric in addition to functional obsolescence.

The workshop will be held from 01 - 10/september 2017.

The workshop provides a first phase of knowledge of the territory and the urban context (9/1st-3rd) through guided inspections and a second phase of studio activities (9/4th-10th) followed by tutors from the involved Universities, supplemented by lectures, conferences and seminars, scheduled in the evening.
