SND Best of Digital Design Competition 2017
SND Best of Digital Design Competition 2017 now is over!
The SND digital | Society for News Design recently has opened its annual Best of Digital Design Competition, for the best digital stories and products from 2017 with goal to identify the best of journalism that pushes the boundaries of design and technology.
About Competition
Formerly known as the SNDies, this digital design competition was launched in 2002 and invites entries from all news sites published anywhere in the world.
All websites, apps, social media design, and experimental products dedicated to the presentation of news may submit. It is not necessary that these sites are part of a newspaper or magazine organization.
The competition includes sixteen different categories:
• World’s Best (Nominations)
• Breaking/Daily News: Single-subject project
• Breaking/Daily News: Planned coverage
• Breaking/Daily News: Non-planned coverage
• Features: Single-subject project
• Features: Coverage
• Graphics: Breaking news
• Graphics: Features and planned coverage
• Graphics: Motion graphics
• Graphics: Social media graphics
• Special event: Natural Disaster Coverage
• Portfolio: New Sites and Redesigns
• Portfolio: Individual
• Portfolio: Organization
• Product Design
• Experimental Design
When submitting entries, it’s important to remember that technology continues to evolve with this competition, submitting a URL does not always give judges a complete impression of how your site/product/story felt to the reader. In other words, they want to experience your entry as a reader would have experienced it. If the site had live aspects, show them a video of it in play. If they are comparing redesigns, before/after images are necessary and if judges need specific hardware to view the story, please say so. The judges understand this tricky dilemma and will look at an assortment of materials before making their decisions. The key is always going to be overall user/reader experience.
For non-English entries, give a thorough summary of the story/project in English.
Submissions must have been published and digitally available between 1 January 2017 and 31 December 2017.
The organizer will select and announce the World’s Best projects at the SND Annual Workshop and Exhibition Awards Dinner in Fall 2018. Competition judges may issue Awards of Excellence, Silver Medals, Gold Medals and Best of Show honors.
Entry Fees for this competition:
• SND members: $25 per entry
• Non-SND members: $40 per entry
• Students: $15 per entry
