The Alpine Fellowship 2020 now is over!
The Alpine Fellowship 2020, art competition now is accepting applications dedicate to ’Forgiveness and Retribution’ that is the theme of this year Alpine Fellowship Annual Symposium, open to all visual artists aged 18 and above.
About Competition
The Alpine Fellowship, a non-profit venture established for the purposes of promoting culture and the arts, now accepting applications for its Visual Arts Prize 2020, art competition for the best visual arts response to ’Forgiveness and Retribution’ – the theme of this year Alpine Fellowship Annual Symposium.
Questions that interest organiser are:
• Does civilisation require forgiveness, and what is the role of catharsis?
• How do modern systems of communication and the resulting decrease of personal encounters assist or deny forgiveness?
• Do we have to ‘earn’ forgiveness: is there an obligation to repent for the history of the nation or group one has been born into? Or are such demands conflating history and agency?
• When is ’forgiveness’ a performative tool for those who have committed condemned acts to self-rehabilitate? Might some acts be unforgivable? And who can be a valid judge?
• Is forgiveness necessarily tied to conditions, or might we be able to forgive unconditionally? To what extent is forgiveness reflected in the criminal justice system, and should it be?
• How does the Scapegoat, historically and in contemporary culture, relieve us of the burden of our failings?
There is a four different categories:
WRITING
All genres are permitted. A maximum of 2500 words per entry.
VISUAL ARTS
All media are permitted, including but not limited to painting, sculpture, video, and installation.
THEATRE
The final piece must be no more than 45 minutes in length and require no more than 4 actors. The winning play will be performed as a rehearsed reading so simplicity in staging is preferred.
To apply you will be asked to submit a treatment of your idea in response to the theme. No more than 500 words, a sample of previous work of at least 10 pages, a 3-4 sample pages of your proposed script or a 1-2 detailed page synopsis of your story.
ACADEMIC WRITING
A maximum of 4000 words per entry. Academic writing is to be construed broadly, by way of contrast with creative writing, as writing that
a) advances and defends an argument on the question and/or that
b) makes a systematic and appreciable contribution to knowledge in academic disciplines, concerning the topic of the symposium. Work from different disciplinary (or interdisciplinary) approaches including, but not limited to, philosophy, history, sociology, literary studies, political theory, biology, anthropology, and psychology will be considered. A prime consideration will be the ability of the piece to speak in an engaging way to a general intellectual audience.
All categories are limited to 1 entry per person.Text must not have been published, self-published or accepted for publication in print or online, or have won or been placed in another competition at any time.
Shortlisted top 20 entries will be announced on 1st June 2020. Winners will be announced on 15th June 2020.
