About Competition

The SAKURA COLLECTION fashion project has relaunched its SAKURA COLLECTION Fashion Design Awards 2021 as an international competition, open to fashion design students or non-professional designers from all parts of the world.

The mission of these awards is to connect traditional Japanese industries and young designers to create new ideas for the future.

From 2012 to 2019, design awards under the theme of “Japan,” were held mainly for fashion students in Asia, and these awards produced 38 grands prix. Since 2020, the organizers have picked a specific Japanese material as the theme to work on and the SAKURA COLLECTION Fashion Design Awards were reborn as an international online contest without borders. This year’s theme is: Futakoshi Chirimen (Hitta Crepe) fabric.

Chirimen is a one of traditional Japanese fabrics of Edo period woven with a stronger weft than warp.
Of the two types, Hitokoshi and Futakoshi Chirimen, Futakoshi is more complex, bringing together two thickly woven threads in an alternating pattern from the right and left. This process gives the fabric a unique fine texture, which is not only exceptionally soft, but also light and breathable. Historically, many traditional kimonos are made with this fabric and then dyed to create the beautiful colors and designs we love. This Futakoshi Chirimen is printed in Kyoto on cloth made in Hokuriku, Japan.
