Cosentino Design Challenge 2020 now is over!

Cosentino Design Challenge 2020: The Cosentino Design Challenge 2020, an annual architecture and design challenge for students organised by Grupo Cosentino has been recently opened for entries with the aim to support students during their formative stage and to encourage them to research on different conceptual approaches.

About Competition

The 14th Cosentino Design Challenge, competitions in Architecture and Design for students organised by Grupo Cosentino , has been recently opened for entires in its 2020 editon.

The aim of Cosentino Design Challenge competition is to support students during their formative stage and to encourage them to research on different conceptual approaches to the layout of spaces and the construction systems defining them. This research and reflection, along with the themes proposed in each edition, have as their basic principle respect for the environment, reuse and management of waste and the possibility of reusing excess material as high-quality raw material.

Cosentino Design Challenge consists of two categories:

• CDC International Design

The 14th Cosentino Design Challenge International Design Competition has the objective of: “COSENTINO AND LOCAL TRADITION: CONTEMPORARY CRAFTMANSHIP”. Students may choose the form and surface of the area of action freely.

Focus must be on:
• The possible relationship between Cosentino andthe creation of elements of high contemporary craftmanship, that could go inline with the companyand its materials.
• Usability of a design taking into account traditions in craftsmanship, from a contemporary point of view.
• Spatial experience, in case of related to the creation ofspaces
• On a new approach to local tradition and crafts, both in concept, as element or spatial experience or application, quality and quality of materials.

The design must include:
• A design proposal, totally open to the set topic “Cosentino and Local Tradition”for each student
• The construction of the element and/or space created must be done using cross-sections, detailed drawings and instructions for assembly
• Consideration must be given to the manufacturability of the pieces and that these can only be made from flat panels and pieces cut directly from a slab

The design must explain:
The solution of the space and/or object andits interaction to the application of the materials and the main facets must be defined properly.The following aspects will be considered to be of special interest:
• The Researchon the spatial experience of the setting, and the relationship with local craftmanship.
• The Useof materials and the main principles that respect the environment.
• Creativityin the design.
• The adaptation of the project idea to the expressive capacity of Cosentino brand materialsand products, and any new designs for materials, finishes, applications, etc. that may be produced.

The following aspects will be considered to be of special interest:
• The Research on the spatial experience of the setting, and the relationship with energy.
• The Use of materials and the main principles that respect the environment.
• Creativity in the design.
• The adaptation of the project idea to the expressive capacity of Cosentino brand materials and products, and any new designs for materials, finishes, applications, etc. that may be produced.

• CDC International Architecture

The 14th Cosentino Design Challenge International Architecture Competition has the objective of working on: ’TO LIVE THE URBAN SPACE (STREET ROOM)’

The design must include:
• An architecture proposal, totally open to the set topic “To live the urban space (Street Room)” for each student.
• The construction of the space and/or element created must be done using cross-sections, detailed drawings and instructions for assembly.
• Other non-Cosentino materials (e.g. wood, glass, etc.) may be used to a certain extent.
• Consideration must be given to thefeasible production of the design and that it can only be made using flat panels and pieces cut directly from a slab.

The design must explain:
The solution of the space and/or object proposed by the student and its interaction to the application of the materials and the main facets must be defined. The following aspects will be considered to be of special interest:
• The Researchon the spatial experienceand his relationship with the urban space.
• The Use of materials and the main principles thatrespect the environment.
• Creativityin the design.
• The adaptation of the project idea to the expressive capacity of Cosentino brand materialsand products, and any new designs for materials, finishes, applications, etc. that may be produced.

The size of the panel must always be DIN A1. File at 300ppp and .jpg. The format can be vertical or horizontal as the student prefers.

The competition is open for submissions at 9 a.m. on 1st of October 2019 and closes at 11,59 p.m. on 1st of June 2020.

The jury will examine the following criteria:

• The conceptual and technical quality of the project.
• The analytical study, thought process and research of the subject.
• The research on the spatial experience of the suroundings.
• The creativity of the design.
• The innovativeness of the design.
• The environmental respect of the design.
• The adaptation of the project idea to the expressive capacity of COSENTINO GROUP brand materials and products.
• New ideas for materials, finishes, applications, etc. that may arise.
• The feasbility for the development and construction of the projects presented.
• The adaptation of the chosen medium for the presentation with regards to graphics, expressivity and the kind of idea presented.
• The presentational quality of the design.

There is no entry fee to participate!

Eligibility

Both categories of the 14th Cosentino Design Challenge – International Design Competition and International Architecture Competition are open to students enrolled in the 2018-2019 academic year at any educational centre or polytechnic offering courses in design, architecture, interior architecture or other similar fields of study.
