About Competition

Beginning in March 2019, the Columbia Design League invites all designers to once again take a part in their design competition titled ’Play With Your City’ through Reimagining Lady Street, a project for making the Lady Street corridor in downtown Columbia, South Carolina more inviting to pedestrian traffic.

Play With Your City 2019 is the second in a series of public competitions designed to involve the public in civic development and design. Artist Jonathan Brilliant captured the first Play With Your City competition in 2011 with a whimsical temporary installation in a downtown park. Field of Good Fortune - a series of human scale fortune cookie fortunes - was in place for one month and is still fondly remembered today by many who visited. Play With Your City invites architects, landscape architects, designers and artists to share their ideas and inspirations reimagine an underutilized three-block corridor crossing through several urban precincts in the heart of downtown Columbia, South Carolina’s capital city. Now, not-so-pedestrian-friendly Lady Street Corridor (between Main Street and Lincoln Street) can be enhanced to link two of the city’s most vibrant districts: Main Street and the Vista.

You can consider temporary – or permanent – interventions to improve the pedestrian experience along the Lady Street Corridor. Solutions that incorporate and blur the distinctions between architecture, landscape design, urban design and art installation are encouraged. Entries should be conceived with a $20,000 total construction budget.
Concepts for Play With Your City 2019 should strive to make the Lady Street corridor a people-first place. Interventions should improve the pedestrian experience and introduce ‘urban stickiness,’ enticements that invite pedestrians to slow down, stop and linger.

Entrants may work individually, but multi-disciplinary design teams are especially encouraged.

Submission requirements:

• A summary of your idea including proposed construction (800 words or less).
• Up to 20 conceptual images (drawings, 3D renderings or visuals) in PDF format.
• Any submitted documentation should be formatted to 8.5 x 11 size in PDF format – 10MB max file size.

Winner notification and announcement is scheduled for Early June.

Entries will be evaluated by a national jury of urban designers, planners and city leaders in a blind jury methodology.

Entry fees:

The submission fee is $125.
