About Competition

The Penguin Random House Design Award 2020, graphic design competitions for students is calling for entries!

The Penguin Random House Student Design Award is an opportunity for students interested in pursuing a career in design to experience real book cover design briefs first-hand. Students may enter a maximum of one cover design in each of the three categories:

• Adult Fiction Cover Award
• Adult Non-Fiction Cover Award
• Children’s Cover Award

Entries must be supplied in the following format:

• PDF
• 300dpi
• CMYK
• 5mm bleed
• Crop marks to be included
• Maximum file size 5 MB

Please include the front cover only on the first page of your PDF and a full cover spread (front, spine and back cover) on the second page of your PDF (supplied as one document).

Students may enter a maximum of 1 design in each of the three categories.

To make the process even more similar to the way Penguin’s designers work, once the judges have selected the shortlist, the Art Directors will give the shortlisted entrants feedback and further art direction on their submissions. Shortlisted entrants will then be invited to resubmit their work, taking all the comments on board, before the final round of judging.

A first, second and third-prize winner will be selected for each category.

Entrants must be eligible to work in the UK and must be available to take up the 4-week work placement if they win first prize.

There is no entry fee to participate!

This graphic design competition for students is open to anyone studying on a Further Education or Higher Education course (part time or full time) in any subject and at any level at the time of the deadline for entries. Entrants must be aged 18 or over by 1 July 2020.
