Competition Details

2027 Tokyo Design Awards, organised by the International Awards Associate (IAA), celebrates creative excellence across a broad range of design disciplines, recognising projects and individuals whose ideas contribute to the future of design.

Under the theme “Ignite the Beginning. Design the Future.”, the programme welcomes bold ideas, innovative solutions and distinctive creative approaches that transform products, spaces and experiences.

The programme features 12 main categories: Architectural Design, Interior Design, Transportation Design, Product Design, Packaging Design, Lighting Design, Conceptual Design, Furniture Design, Landscape Design, Character & Pop Design, Honorary Designer and Emerging Designer.

Entries are assessed through blind judging on a 100-point scale, considering creativity, concept, planning and execution, visual design, innovation, functionality, effectiveness and impact, while Honorary Designer entries are evaluated on professional expertise, achievements, creativity, influence and global recognition.

The highest-scoring entry in each main design category may receive the Design of the Year distinction, alongside Honorary Designer of the Year, Platinum (85-100 points), Gold (75-84 points) and Silver (65-74 points) recognition, with results scheduled for 7 May 2027.

Submission requirements

Submit online through a registered account, selecting the relevant category or categories and uploading a project brief with supporting materials.

Entry brief - approximately 350 words explaining the design, objectives, concept, execution and impact; individual-category entries should highlight personal contributions and achievements, and non-English materials should include an English translation or summary.

Images - flattened JPEG or JPG files, maximum 4MB per image, with a recommended width of 1,200px, 300dpi and RGB colour.

Eligible work must have been produced, launched or released on or after 1 January 2023, according to the current eligibility section; projects may be completed, conceptual or in progress.

Where relevant, provide video or audio links hosted on third-party platforms and keep access available during judging; portfolios, CVs, press coverage and previous recognitions may be included as supporting materials.

The same work may be entered in multiple categories, with an additional fee for each extra category.
