The Wellcome Photography Prize 2027 invites photographers and image-makers worldwide to explore health, science and human experiences through compelling visual storytelling.
Short description
The Wellcome Photography Prize 2027 is an international photography competition organized by Wellcome, celebrating powerful images that explore health, science, medicine and the human experience. The prize encourages photographers and visual storytellers from around the world to share compelling perspectives on the issues that shape our lives and wellbeing.
Through photography and scientific imaging, the competition aims to spark curiosity, encourage conversation and deepen public understanding of health and its connections to people, communities and the world around us.
The competition features three categories:
Striking Solo Photography: Recognizing individual photographs that capture a compelling moment, subject or perspective related to health.
A Storytelling Series: Celebrating collections of photographs that communicate a meaningful narrative about health and human experiences.
The Marvels of Scientific and Medical Imaging: Highlighting extraordinary images created through scientific and medical imaging techniques that reveal otherwise unseen aspects of life, health and research.
The prize welcomes diverse creative and documentary approaches, from personal stories and social issues to scientific discoveries and medical research, offering an international platform for images that inform, challenge and inspire audiences.
Entries must feature original photographic or scientific imagery created after 31st December 2021.
Illustrations, moving images and AI-generated images are not eligible.
Submission Deadline: 21st October 2026.
Winner Announcement: Summer 2027.
Submission requirements
➜ For the A Storytelling Series category, submit a series of 3–5 photographs that together communicate a coherent narrative.
➜ Images must be at least 15 MB uncompressed, use the Adobe RGB (1998) colour profile and be suitable for high-quality printing. TIFF or high-resolution JPEG files are preferred.
➜ Multiple entries are permitted, but the same image cannot be entered into more than one category.
➜ When photographing people, obtain appropriate consent or model releases where relevant and follow ethical storytelling practices.
Eligibility
The Wellcome Photography Prize 2027 is open to participants of all experience levels from anywhere in the world, including amateur and professional photographers, scientists, researchers and medical imaging specialists.
Benefits
➜ £10,000 will be awarded to the winner of each of the three competition categories.
➜ An additional 22 selected entries will receive £1,000 each.
➜ Winning and selected works may benefit from international media coverage, exhibitions, promotional activities and opportunities to reach new audiences.
