The Municipality of Pazardzhik in Bulgaria recently has announced an international architectural competition aimed at transforming the iconic area of the City Market and turning it into the heart of a modern city.
Pazardzhik is known to historians as an important trade and administrative center, which is evidenced by numerous written and material sources and archaeological finds dating from ancient times. The city is situated on the Maritsa River and is known for its proximity to important trade routes, which contributed to its development and economic prosperity. Over the centuries, Pazardzhik has been home to many cultures, and evidence of this can be seen in historic architectural monuments and traditions preserved to this day.
This competition is a unique opportunity for creators from all over the world to contribute to the development of Pazardzhik’s central area with ideas that preserve cultural heritage and inspire future generations. A chance is emerging for bold architectural and urban inspiration that will confidently combine history with modernity, creating a new recognizable face for the city.
The main goal of the competition is to find an innovative and functional solution for the renovation of the City Market that meets all modern needs and requirements of urban planning, design, and service, as well as to satisfy the desires of producers, buyers, and visitors of the market. By addressing the existing issues, the aim is to gather a wide range of high-quality conceptual projects that contribute to the spatial development of the area and transform this iconic place for the city, so that its new appearance meets the needs of the community and enriches the urban environment.
The competition requires participants to propose an conceptual project for the construction of a new City Market and for the improvement of the urban environment, which is the subject of the competition, based on which a technical and main investment project will be awarded.
Organisers hope that the implementation of the winning project will contribute to better integration of the City Market into the overall appearance of the central parts of the city, as well as to address issues related to the connections between different spaces, functionality, pedestrian crossings, traffic organization, environment management, and others. The ultimate goal of the project is to ensure a higher quality of life and service, both for market producers, traders, and consumers, and for the residents and visitors of the city.

The competition is open to various specialists in the field of architecture and urban planning from around the world.
➜ Prize:
The best three projects will be awarded with a total of 15,000 Euro, 7,500 Euro of which, are reserved for the 1st Place winning project.
