2021 Practical Design Innovation Award now is over!

2021 Practical Design Innovation Award: The Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) recently has announced its 2021 Practical Design Innovation Award, to promote the area of practical design education to celebrate outstanding examples of this work from around the world.

Short description

Beijing Institute of Technology invities all students and recent graduates to particiapate in its Practical Design Innovation Award (PDIA) with aim to promote the area of practical design education to celebrate outstanding examples of this work from around the world.

We define Practical Design as work that is developed in response to a specific problem or situation, employing a rational design approach to achieve a design that is fit-for-purpose, tested and applicable in a real-world scenario.

The last couple of years have seen unprecedented challenges for design schools in terms of access to studios, opportunities for user research and access to prototyping workshops.

This competition seeks to celebrate work that has overcome these challenges in novel and innovative ways.

What organizer are serching for?

The work should be developed in response to a real-world problem or situation that the project has identified, demonstrating how the design has been prototyped and tested and communicating a design that is fit-for-purpose, tested and applicable in a practical sense. The scale of the problem is of secondary importance to the innovation and creative thinking displayed.

Entries may be in any area, including but not limited to product design, industrial design, service design, spatial design, interaction design.

An entry may be derived from graduation work, coursework, or work specifically developed to fit with the competition requirements.

Submission requirements:

Written Description - answer the three questions in the submission system.
Visual Description - (max. 3 x A3, landscape, PDF format, file size max. 10MB per image)
Introduction Video/strong> - (max. 2 minutes) explaining the problems, design process, and results to be solved (MP4 format, max. 60MB)

Evaluation Criteria:

success in defining the problem or situation
level of innovation in approach to solving the problem
practicality of the design solution
quality of prototyping, testing and evaluation during the design process.

The winners will be announced on December 11th, 2021.

Who may enter?

All students enrolled in (and recent graduates from) a design course at any higher education institution are eligible. Students may participate individually or as part of a team (suggested maximum size of team is 5).

Prize:

There are 25 awards with a total prize allocation of over US$15,000. The Gold winner will receive 30,000RMB, Silver winner will receive 10,000RMB and the Bronze winner will receive 5,000RMB.

There will be other awards as well.
