Short description
Following the success of our first autoportrait open call last year, Kuala Lumpur International Photoawards (KLPA) are very excited to announce once again its international photography competitionthe, 2025 Interim Edition with the theme Experimental Self-Portraits.
As one of the leading global photography awards based in Asia, the KLPA Interim Edition emphasizes innovation in contemporary portrait photography. It is open to a wide range of visual approaches, including analogue and digital methods, mixed media, and experimental processes that extend beyond traditional photography.
This special edition of the Kuala Lumpur International Photoawards invites photographers from around the world to challenge conventional ideas of self-representation by exploring new and unconventional techniques.
By focusing on originality, process, narrative, and conceptual strength, the prize seeks to celebrate self-portraits that push creative boundaries and reflect the diverse ways photographers interpret their own identities. Artificial intelligence-generated images are explicitly excluded, ensuring that the work submitted showcases authentic artistic vision and personal expression.
This open call encourages both established photographers and emerging artists to reimagine the role of the self-portrait in a rapidly evolving visual culture. By doing so, the prize provides a unique platform for photographers to gain international recognition while contributing to a global dialogue on self-representation in art and photography.
Selected finalists will have their work exhibited at the KLPA 2026 Finalists’ Exhibition as well as partner festivals, reaching audiences far beyond Malaysia. With a focus on creative risk-taking and conceptual depth, the prize highlights the growing importance of self-portraiture as a medium for personal storytelling, cultural critique, and artistic innovation.
By spotlighting groundbreaking work, the KLPA Interim Edition cements its role as a vital platform for photographers to expand the possibilities of self-portraiture in contemporary photography.
