Short description

The Adachi Foundation for the Preservation of Woodcut Printing is calling for applications for The Adachi Contemporary Ukiyo-e Award 2023.

For the Adachi Contemporary Ukiyo-e Award 2023, organiser is looking for 21st century ukiyo-e artists that depict “ukiyo” or “the current times.”

Since 2009, the Adachi Contemporary Ukiyo-e Award has produced woodcut prints based on the works that the winners created. This is an opportunity to become an ukiyo-e artist like Hokusai and create works in collaboration with modern-day carvers and printers.

Ukiyo-e prints, which are loved around the world as an iconic part of Japan, are produced through the collaboration of an artist, a carver, and a printer. Hokusai and Hiroshige, among others, were ukiyo-e artists called “eshi,” who were specialists in creating sketches for ukiyo-e prints. The ukiyo-e they created were truly mirrors of the times, reflecting social conditions and historical backgrounds.
