Brief Overview

The 14th PHODAR Biennial invites photographers worldwide to explore memory, human presence and the passage of time through photographic series on the theme Traces Remain.

Competition Details

Organised by the Bulgarian PHODAR Foundation, the 14th edition explores Traces Remain, a theme inspired by Pavel Vezhinov’s novel.

Series may examine family memories, social change, transformed landscapes or other traces of lived experience, using any photographic genre.

Each author may enter one series in either the Grand Prize or Debut section; Debut is intended for emerging authors without significant national or international achievements.

Collaborative projects are accepted, and copyright remains with the photographer.

Deadline note: the entry portal states 31 December 2026, while the regulations state 1 January 2027; applicants should confirm the closing time with the organiser.

Submission requirements

Upload 8–20 images forming one coherent series or photo essay at entry.phodar.net, with your name, email, country and project title.

Use JPG/JPEG, at least 3,000 pixels on the longest side, 300 dpi and no more than 10 MB per image; number files in viewing order.

Photographs must date from 1 January 2025 onwards, except earlier images in long-term projects continued or developed since then. Stock photography is excluded. Selected authors may need to provide a portrait, CV and further project details.

Eligibility

Open worldwide to professional and amateur photographers over 18, or the legal age of majority in their country.

Benefits

Selected work will be exhibited during the PHODAR festival in Sofia, showcased online and included in the festival photobook.

The website advertises a €2,000 Grand Prize, a €600 Humanistic Photography Award and a €600 Debut Award, but the prize heading still refers to 2025; amounts for this edition should be confirmed with the organiser.

Entry fees

An entry fee is not specified in the published regulations; confirm any applicable charge with the organiser.
