35th Tokyo International Film Festival 2022: The 35th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) now is calling for entries in its main competition section, accepting submissions from around the globe for films that have not yet been released in Japan, including documentary and animation features.

Short description

The 35th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) is calling for entries! This competition is open to filmmakers from around the world.

TIFF is accepting submissions from around the globe for films that have not yet been released in Japan (Japan Premiere), including documentary and animation features.

As one of the leading film festivals in Asia, TIFF showcases premieres of films created by established filmmakers as well as outstanding works by up-and-coming directors from around the world in a variety of sections.

The main Competition section is the core of the festival and aims to support promising filmmakers who will play leading roles in the industry, as well as contribute to the enrichment of cinematic artistry and international cultural exchange.

Films from around the globe that have not yet been released in Japan compete for the top prize, the Tokyo Grand Prix. Features completed after January 1, 2022, are eligible for selection by TIFF, and undergo a rigid review process.

The 35th Tokyo International Film Festival is scheduled for 24 October - 2 November, 2022 at the cinema-rich Hibiya-Yurakucho-Ginza area of Tokyo.

Submission requirements:

All films selected and invited for the Competition section must be films completed after January 1st, 2022 and must be at least its Japan Premiere at TIFF. World and International Premieres are given priority. Films that are available on the Internet, TV (including IPTV) or in-flight movies, and films commercially released on DVD, VOD, or any other format are not eligible. Short films are not eligible. Must be feature films running over 60 minutes. Screening material should be in digital format in high-definition format, with English subtitles.

The result of the Pre-Selection will be notified via e-mail during September 2022.

Who may enter?

In the main Competition, organizer is accepting submissions from filmmakers around the globe.

Prize:

TIFF will award the following prizes in accordance with the decision of the International Competition Jury:

Special Jury Prize
Award for Best Director
Award for Best Actress
Award for Best Actor
Award for Best Artistic Contribution

The cash prize is to be decided.

Entry fees:

Early Bird (20 April — 19 June, 2022) - Free
Regular (20 June — 15 July, 2022) - 3,000 JPY
