Short description

International Bamboo Pavilion Design Competition, recently organised by World Bamboo Organization (WBO) inviting designers, artists, architects and architecture students to participate!

Organiser encourage you to create the most innovative design for a pavilion to be constructed under the masterful expertise of builder Jorg Stamm during the 5-day hands-on 4th World Bamboo Workshop in Thanh Hoa province, VietNam, 16-20 September, 2022.

This pavilion seek to explore global creativity to realize a contemporary pavilion, one with global appeal, and not one of any particular culture or geography. The competition itself will challenge designers and architects, as well as the judges, to think beyond the conventional.

The size limitation of the PAVILION is a maximum quadrant of 6m x 9m, and a maximum height of 5 meters.

What exactly is a pavilion?
Pavilions can be simple or complicated. They can be part structure, part art installation, part communal experience, and part practical solution to the weather. A pavilion is a flexible architectural open space that invites people to come in and spend time in it. It can be a meditative space, a social place, a dining room, an exhibition hall, a tea house, an amphitheater, a games room, something to come into to get out of the rain, or to seek shelter from the sun. The Thanh Tam EcoPark is looking for an extraordinary pavilion to be built by people who love bamboo.
The construction/build of the Pavilion will be an incredible opportunity for participants to learn not only the basics but the cutting-edge technologies of building a structure made entirely of bamboo, with one of the most talented workshop teachers on the planet. The finished shelter will contribute to the World Bamboo Workshop theme: Bamboo for Green Life and Sustainable Development, for further reflection and discussion on this type of architecture, its significance, and its future potentials.

Judges will select the winning design to be engineered and built by a team of workers during the 5 day World Bamboo Workshop in the Thanh Tam Bamboo EcoPark in Thanh Hoa, VietNam. The winning design will be in the hands of master builder Jorg Stamm and a team comprised of Peter van Lengen and Martin Mortera. On site in Thanh Tam EcoPark, participants will work under Stamm’s direction, alongside each other in teams, to construct a marvelous pavilion that will become a permanent structure within the vast EcoPark. The completed pavilion will serve as testimony of global collaboration between sustainable architecture and social citizenship, and the commitment of bamboo for a green future.
